Free Tablet with Medicaid

Over 90 million Americans are enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP. If you are one of them, you have already cleared the biggest hurdle to getting a free tablet and free monthly internet service.

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that helps with medical costs. Because eligibility for Medicaid is based on low income ($20,000 or less for an individual in many states), it is used as a "Categorical Qualifier" for the FCC's Lifeline and Affordable Connectivity Programs.

Step 1: Check Your Document Status

Before applying, you need to find your proof of coverage. This can be tricky because different states call Medicaid by different names (e.g., Medi-Cal in California, MassHealth in Massachusetts, TennCare in Tennessee).

Acceptable Proof includes:

  • State Benefit Letter: An official letter from your state agency dated within the last 12 months.
  • Managed Care Plan Screenshot: If you use a private plan like "UnitedHealthcare Community Plan" or "BlueCross for Medicaid", a screenshot of your portal showing an "Active" status and "Coverage Dates" is accepted.
  • Medicaid Card: A scan of the front and back of the card. Warning: Some providers reject just the card if it doesn't have an expiration date. A letter is safer.

Common Mistake: Medicare vs. Medicaid

Medicare (for seniors 65+) does NOT automatically qualify you for a free tablet. Only Medicaid (for low income) does. If you have "Dual Eligibility" (both), make sure to upload your Medicaid card, not your Medicare card.

Step 2: Applying for a Child (CHIP)

Many parents assume they don't qualify because they make too much money, but their children are on CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program). Good news: You can apply on behalf of your child!

How to fill the form for CHIP:

  1. Register the account under YOUR name (the parent/guardian).
  2. Identify yourself as the "Benefit Qualifying Person (BQP)".
  3. Enter the child's information in the "Student/Beneficiary" section.
  4. Upload the child's CHIP card or award letter.

Step 3: Annual Recertification

Unlike a one-time gift, this is a government benefit that requires upkeep. Every year, you must recertify that you are still on Medicaid. If we lose your Medicaid status (e.g., your income increases), you must notify the provider within 30 days.

What Tablet Will I Get?

It depends on the provider in your state, but typical devices include:

  • Sky Devices Elite T8 (8-inch Android)
  • Vortex Tab 8
  • Alcatel Joy Tab

Note: iPads are almost never provided for free. These are basic Android tablets suitable for school, email, and web browsing.
